Joel Salatin
Polyface Farms, established in 1961 by William and Lucille Salatin in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, began on the most degraded farm near Staunton. Inspired by nature, they and their children embarked on a journey of restoration and innovation. Defying conventional wisdom, the Salatins planted trees, implemented large-scale composting, constructed ponds, and pioneered daily rotational grazing using portable electric fencing. They also developed portable shelter systems to raise animals on perennial prairie polycultures.
Today, Polyface Farms stands as a leading example of sustainable, non-industrial food production in America. Embracing the belief that nature's design is optimal, the Salatin family invites like-minded individuals to join their mission. Their goal is to foster agricultural enterprises that enrich emotionally, economically, and environmentally, encouraging their replication worldwide. Continually evolving, the Salatins refine their models to advance environmentally-friendly farming practices to new heights of expertise.
